How to Celebrate MLK Day of Service

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, also known as MLK Day of Service, is a day dedicated to volunteerism and service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. It’s observed on the third Monday of January each year, which means in 2024, it falls on January 15th.

There are several reasons why Jack and Jill of America, and in particular the Golden Isles Chapter of Jack and Jill (GIJJOA) participates in the MLK Day of Service:
Aligning with MLK Day of Service values:
- Social justice and equality: Jack and Jill’s mission aims to nurture and develop African American youth as leaders while enhancing the lives of all children. This mission naturally aligns with Dr. King’s legacy of service, fighting for equal rights and justice for all.
- Community service: Service is a core value of Jack and Jill. Participating in this day embodies this value and allows members to practice it actively.
- Leadership development: Engaging in service projects allows youth members to develop valuable leadership skills such as teamwork, initiative, and problem-solving. This aligns with Jack and Jill’s goal of nurturing future leaders.
Honoring Dr. King and his legacy:
- Teaching children about civil rights: Participating in the MLK Day of Service allows Jack and Jill families to discuss Dr. King’s life and accomplishments with their children. This allows them to learn about the Civil Rights Movement and the continued fight for equality.
- Inspiring action: By actively participating in service, the Golden Isles Chapter of Jack and Jill of America demonstrates the power of individual action in creating positive change. This serves as an inspiration to both members and the broader community.
- Strengthening ties to the community: Engaging in service projects allows Golden Isles Jack and Jill members to connect with their communities and address local needs. This strengthens their community bonds and promotes a sense of civic responsibility.
Additionally:
- National Day of Service initiative: The MLK Day of Service is a nationwide initiative. As a prominent organization dedicated to African American youth and families, Jack and Jill’s participation contributes to its overall success.
- Setting an example: By actively participating in the MLK Day of Service, Jack and Jill encourage other individuals and organizations to participate and contribute to their communities.
Jack and Jill’s participation in the MLK Day of Service reflects their commitment to their core values, honors Dr. King’s legacy, and contributes to building a more just and equitable society.

The chapter members, children, and fathers participated in the annual MLK Parade from Howard Coffin Park to the Risley Annex this year.
Immediately following the parade, the entire chapter volunteered at Sparrow’s Nest.
The Sparrow’s Nest ministry is dedicated to supporting families who are experiencing food and economic crises. It was formed over fifteen years ago to act as a clearing house for 85 churches and provide food and other assistance to bridge the gaps for those in crisis in our local community. Families and individuals are welcome to visit once a month to receive food and hygiene products. Additionally, they may apply for utility assistance once every twelve months.
